UK Media Centre and Windows Home Server User Group

I went to the 2nd Media Centre and WHS User Group meeting in Birmingham on Saturday. It was a good event and I saw some old friends including Ian Dixon and Richard Tubb.

There were a number of talks including one from the Microsoft Media Center Community lead, Pete Brown, who had flown over from the US especially for the event.

Evolve Media described the trade offs when building a media centre. There is a balance between power, storage, processor, video, sound and placement which all affect how good your media centre is. I certainly like the lifeStream and if I hadn’t recently built a new media centre I might just have flexed the credit card.

Andrew Edney gave a very informative talk on the next version of Windows Home Server, codenamed Vail.

Finally a really useful tool, DVBLogic’s TV Source, which allows you to share TV cards with other machines and also enables TV cards not supported by Media Center including some cheap ones.
