IaaS means Infrastructure as a Service, and is the provision and management of computing infrastructure over the internet
The major IaaS services are Compute (Virtual Machines and Containers), Storage, and Networking.
With IaaS, Microsoft supplies the hardware but you have to install and manage the operating systems and licensing. You also have to manage backup and recovery. IaaS is the most flexible of the cloud service types as you have the highest level of control.
Microsoft is responsible for ensuring the cloud infrastructure is functioning correctly; you are responsible for ensuring the service they are using is configured correctly, is up to date, and is available to your customers. This is referred to as the shared responsibility model.
IaaS is commonly used in the following scenarios
- Migrating workloads
- Test and development
- Website hosting
- Storage, backup, and recovery
